Katie stood silently, the chilly winds whipping her hair into her face as she looked over the grounds of her former home. A few leaves which had fallen early from the trees scurried across the toes of her worn out tennis shoes. She hadn’t been back to Hogwarts since the battle everything looked different now.
She had been sent to speak to the Hogwarts nurse today by St. Mungo’s. She hadn’t wanted to go, she never wanted to see Hogwarts again. Didn’t want to remember all the good times she had here, or all the hard painful ones either, and she especially didn’t want to have to remember the final battle.
Her boss however didn’t much care for her opinion and had sent her anyways. The meeting hadn’t taken long a matter of minutes really. Now she was stuck with an hour to fill since her boss had told her to not come back before then. After her meeting she had left wandering the halls which had once been part of her home. She had stopped at a window sighing heavily as she looked out towards the Black Lake.
At this time it was easy to see why it had got its name. With the sun hidden from view by a dreary endless line of clouds the lake had taken on an inky black coloring. None of the Hogwarts students seemed to have wanted to brave the elements today, seeing as the clouds seemed to threaten rain at any second. It was the exact place Katie wanted to be.
She headed down towards the lake, the wind whipping her hair around. The white tomb was right there ahead of her and it drew her in like a moth. (OCC: I’m going by the book here, which places the white tomb on the shores of the lake, where the movie place it in the middle of the lake.) She stood silently next to the grave of her former Headmaster and sighed loudly. Her life might have changed drastically during the last couple of years but her greatest hope was that the rest of the wizarding world would be able to pick up the pieces and go on like nothing had happened.
It seemed that so far they were at least attempting to do that. Hogwarts had opened back up. The students were sent to learn again. People could once again be seen roaming through Hogsmede and Diagon Alley. Life was moving on, slowly, maybe a bit rocky at times, but it was indeed moving forward. Katie only hoped she would be able to catch on and move forward too. So far she had been pretty good at putting on a pretty smile and pretending to be the girl she had always been during school. A happy, friendly, go lucky girl. She wasn’t sure how much more she would be able to fake it. She was still that girl, but things were more confusing now. She just could’t seem to trust anyone, and well she was turning into be a bit of a bitter and sarcastic bitch if she didn’t catch herself in time and put up a front. Of course most people just put it down to her being brutally honest now days. Maybe it was just a phase or maybe it was the new Katie or maybe she was just part of growing up when a person learns what true heartbreak is and grows a little bit more bitter. For the children of the Second Wizarding War it seemed that that little part of growing up seemed to hit just a little bit sooner.
As she turned to go she caught a glimpse of black out of the corner of her eye. She could have sworn it was the corner of someones robe but when she turned to investigate no one was there. She squinted her eyes trying to make something out of it, before saying into thin air, “Is anyone there? No need to hide.” She almost laughed out loud at that but was able to keep herself in check. The statement wasn’t really that funny but if no one answered she was making quite a habit of talking to herself, enough that if she didn’t watch it people would start thinking her insane.
